Scott McDonald scored the only goal of the game to ensure Middlesbrough stayed within touching distance of the Championship's automatic promotion places.

Watford, who matched their hosts for most of the game, will feel aggrieved at the manner of their defeat.

Former Celtic striker McDonald looked offside for the winning goal, scored just five minutes before the break.

Victory keeps Middlesbrough in third place behind Southampton and West Ham.

Watford, who came into the game on the back of successive league wins for the first time this season, could have conceded three in the opening six minutes.

Doncaster striker Billy Sharp opened the scoring on an emotional night at the Keepmoat Stadium, but Middlesbrough came from behind to win.

Before kick-off Rovers announced that captain Sharp's two-day-old son had died on Saturday. The striker's response was to dedicate a stunning early volley to his memory.

Barry Robson's drive restored parity, and a mistake by Neil Sullivan allowed Marvin Emnes to grab a second.

Robson sealed the win with a penalty.

A minute's applause marked the tragically short life of Sharp's little boy Luey before kick-off and the forward sent fans at the Keepmoat Stadium into raptures when he netted a stunning dipping volley inside the first 15 minutes.

A Guly Do Prado brace helped leaders Southampton maintain their 100% home record with a superb win over fellow high-flyers Middlesbrough.

The Saints fully deserved their victory after dominating the match but were helped by defensive errors from Boro.

Guly opened the scoring when he headed home unchallenged before he added a second from Rickie Lambert's nod down.

David Connolly ensured the win with a late superb drive to keep Saints top, three points ahead of West Ham.

The result will have been a sobering one for Middlesbrough, who have started the season strongly and would have gone level with Nigel Adkins' side had they won.

Middlesbrough moved up to second in the Championship table as goals from Rhys Williams and Marvin Emnes were enough to defeat Derby County.

Williams turned in the opener from close range just before the interval.

And Emnes added the home side's second seven minutes after the break when he headed home Justin Hoyte's cross.

Derby, who hit the woodwork four times, handed a debut to 15-year-old striker Mason Bennett - the youngest player in the club's history.

Lee Holmes had held the record but England Under-16 international Bennett - at just 15 years and 99 days old - ensured his place Derby's history.

Steve Cotterill enjoyed a dream start to life as Nottingham Forest manager as Middlesbrough lost in the Championship for the first time this season.

Marcus Tudgay put the home side in front after 35 minutes when he fired home Chris Gunter's right-wing cross.

Midfielder Lewis McGugan doubled the lead after a scramble which saw Ishmael Miller, twice, and Radoslaw Majewski have shots blocked.

It was Forest's first home win in the league this season.

Boro offered little - especially in a lacklustre first half - and Forest could have extended their lead when Wes Morgan flashed a header wide of the goal.

Liam Trotter struck as Millwall grabbed their second away point of the season and ensured Middlesbrough were held to a fourth successive league draw.

Barry Robson had put Boro ahead from 25 yards after Scott McDonald had chested the ball into his path for their first goal at home since August.

McDonald struck the post before Trotter headed home from close range after a scramble inside the Boro six-yard box.

Faris Haroun almost snatched the points for Boro but his header hit the post.

That came in the 95th minute after the substitute had connected with a cross from Marvin Emnes.

Middlesbrough recorded their third successive goalless draw, but Tony Mowbray's side remain just two points behind leaders Southampton.

Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici had a good game and produced a superb double save to deny Middlesbrough pair Scott McDonald and Marvin Emnes.

Reading's best efforts came from Adam Le Fondre and Simon Church.

Late on Boro piled on the pressure and both Emnes and Barry Robson hit the post but Reading held on for the draw.
